The Great Escape.

The two friends sat across from each other. Both were digesting what they heard from their “host” Hem-Netjer Tepey.

“Well, so much for being reasonable.

“I’m sure he thinks he’s being reasonable, Hitomi.”

“What he thinks and what reality is are two different things, girl.”

Instead of answering, C.J. looked up. “You notice all the wiring down the halls?”

        “Yeah, pretty hacked together.”

“Since we’ve known that the Fourth Reich has been eating other organizations for a long time already, and I don’t really think Buck would want to make a deal, what say we get out of here and do some damage on the way?”

“Oh! I didn’t get you anything!”

“Cute.” Siege got up and looked at the door. “We’ll follow the wiring. Ready?”

        “Whenever you are.”

With a vicious kick, C.J. knocked the door on its hinges and a little ways into the hallway. Two guards tentatively looked into the room, obviously shocked. Giving a saccharine smile, C.J. grabbed one with each hand and knocked their heads together.

They both went limp. Siege dragged them into the cell and dropped them onto the benches in the cell. She dusted her hands off and gestured to the door.

        “Let’s go.”

They moved quickly, following the path of the wires. Any guards they encountered were taken care of swiftly. Even Hitomi managed to get in some action. Truth be told, watching C.J. work was amazing. Many of their friends had remarked on her grace in battle over the years.

It didn’t take long to trace the wiring back to its source. If the bundles that brought power to the rest of the fortress looked like it had been cobbled together, the generator room was simply a mess.

“Woah. This is just asking for sabotage!”

“Well, I think we can oblige. What do you think, ‘Omi?”

Hitomi shrugged, “Luckily taking something apart is easier than putting it together. Just start hitting things. That should do it.”

“Okay, I kinda like that.” Not wasting any time, she grabbed a piece of conduit leaning up against the wall and started swinging. The set up wasn’t anything spectacular. Obviously, they hadn’t had an engineer set this up, it did the job ad no more. Unfortunately the two friends failed to notice one thing.

They felt a strong rumble and alarms started blaring. “What was that?”

Hitomi shook her head, “I have no idea. Let’s get out of here.”

        “Yes. Head for the crawler.”

They sprinted through the halls, not running into anyone on the way. They stopped briefly at their cell, noting that the guards were gone. C.J. looked at her friend, “Self destruct?”

“I think so. I’m not sure what that would gain them. This whole place has only a couple of dozen people in it.”

They set off again at a jog down the hall. The rumbling had subsided a bit, but by the time they arrived at the antechamber that acted as an airlock for the cold, the explosions had started.

“Do you have any idea what you have done?” The priest’s voice rang through the room, despite sounding weary and wounded. They both turned and stared. The man was still wearing his mask, but his robe was torn and bloodied.

“If you studied Buck as much as you claimed, you would know he would never broker with terrorists.”

“Terrorist, Miss McCormick? I was trying to make the world better.

“Not if you’re willing to attack places just to draw people out.”

He laughed now, ending in a choking cough. “You know nothing. The few have a duty to give for the all.”

Siege’s biting reply was cut off by a voice that they felt more than heard, “Hem-Netjer Tepey. You stand accused of failure. I have come to take back that which you were given.”

The owner of the voice stepped from the shadows. Shadows that had been empty a moment ago. It was a hulking being that seemed to emanate a fiery light. It’s most striking feature was it’s jackal-like head.

        It wasn’t a mask.
