Carved Cave

“Why keep such a tight cap on this?” “Because our government is being more paranoid then usual, Miss McCormick. We’ve discovered a few things here that would probably rewrite history, if anyone would ever know about it.” “Sir, should we be telling this to them? They’re civilians.” “So am I Sergeant. And their clearance is higher than yours.” “Yes, sir.” There was a slight undercurrent of resentment in the response. “As I was saying. The government would rather something as important as this be under wraps. It would probably invalidate most of what we know. Rather, what we think we know.” Doctor Carroll was of medium build, and had a perpetual slouch. He wore glasses that he was continually adjusting. “Well, why keep up in suspense?” C.J.’s eyes were sparkling. Hitomi knew it wasn’t just from being at the dig. To think, she was just teasing Hitomi about blushing. “Well, considering your reputation, which I got a rather bombastic lecture by the managing general on, I think you’d rather

Canyon Trek

The next morning C.J. and Hitomi had packed lightly and were ready to go. Buck had gotten them clearance to join a government sponsored dig in Arizona. He had been working on getting clearance for them for a couple of months, and word had finally gotten back that it was a go. Buck handed the clearance papers to the two women, “Enjoy it, girls. I don’t know what they’ve been digging up, aside from just ‘ruins’, but I know you enjoy this sort of thing just as much as I do.” “Thanks, Buck. We appreciate it.” He waved off their thanks with a harrumph and gave them both rough bear hugs. “Ring me up when you land, and if you have any troubles with the military overseers. The general in charge is a bit of a hard ass.” “Will do. We’re not there to make trouble. Right, Hitomi?” “Of course not.” She glanced at C.J. “Perfect angels.” Buck gave a hearty laugh and embraced them one last time before heading back to his office. Alana walked up and embraced them after. “Be careful, but enjoy yourselve

A Couple Days Off

“I can’t Siege, I’m too busy.” “Busy feeling sorry for yourself?” Hitomi felt herself flush at her friend’s blunt tone. “I’m not feeling sorry for myself. I want to be here to help. I have to. I owe it to her.” C.J. sighed, letting her exasperation and worry for her friend show through. “Hitomi, she doesn’t blame you. You don’t owe her. Frankly, I think you’re worrying her. I know you’re worrying me.” Hitomi looked up from the device she was tinkering with, “What? Why am I worrying you?” The set of Siege’s mouth said volumes. “You’ve been making mistakes. You know it, I know it. Now Alana knows it. She’s worried about you.” Her expression softened, “ I’m worried about you. If I screw up, I can handle it. You’re a bit more,” she paused, “fragile.” Hitomi looked annoyed. “Oh come on. I may not be as strong, fast or tough as you, but I think I’ve proven that I can hold my own.” “I’m not saying you can’t,” she leaned back on a bench and crossed her arms. “I’m worried you’ll fall into some

Interlude

The temple was a simple building. A hybrid of various pyramidal style temples around the world. Both inside and outside the temple was simple and unadorned, aside from torches and large stone vessels that contained roaring bonfires inside the large central chamber. In the center was a stone alter where a lone man was standing. He wore simple blue robes, and was bald. Kneeling in benediction in front of a fiery apparition of a jackal-headed being. The being spoke in a voice felt rather than heard. “I expect you will be able to accomplish more than Hem-Netjer Tepey?” “Yes, my lord.” “I trust you will not work at betrayal, as Hem-Netjer Tepey did.” That was not a question. “Never, my lord.” “Very well. The task is yours Oord. I do not wish to tell my Lord Anubis of yet another failed acolyte.” “Thank you, my lord. I will not disappoint.” “No. You won’t. You will also keep to the shadows. Do not let hubris lure into challenging this world’s champions. To do so risks defeat, and alerting th

Update

Hello all. Just a quick post-story note. Tomorrow we’ve got an interlude, then on Monday a new story starts. The only other thing I wanted to mention that November is coming up, and yes while saying that may make me Mr. Obvious, November is also NaNoWrimo.         That’s right, National Novel Writing Month is here again. This year, I plan to join, if I can. I’m not sure yet if I’m starting something new or keeping with Adventure Inc, which I would like to do. I’ve gotta hit the NaNoWriMo forums to see if that works.         That’s all to report for now, as usual, I welcome your feedback. I’m not writing in a vacuum here, so please, let me know what you think! Until next time!

All's Well. . .

The doctor and nurses from the hospital made the flight back home as comfortable as they could for Alana, who was still a bit weak, which was to be expected. Even though she tried to hide it, Alana could almost feel the guilt coming off of Hitomi. The few times she attempted to broach the subject, Hitomi would just apologize profusely, so she stopped bringing it up. Her doctor spent some of the flight going over a basic therapy regimen and promised to talk with the institute’s doctor about it. When they landed, a helicopter was waiting to fly them to the institute. The doctor from Chicago briefed Doctor Conner from the institute about Alana’s situation and the therapy plan. Conner clucked a bit over Alana and made sure she was comfortable. Once the on-loan nurses and doctor were shuttled back to the airport, Jeremy wandered in, trailed by a slight woman, who he introduced as his girlfriend Dana. Alana was actually grateful for the bullet wound for an excuse to limit the visit, but des
