Play Date, Part 2
Casting her eyes about, CJ looked at the next nearest table. “This is gonna be close. Stay down. I’m going to see if I can disable it.”
“What? How are you gonna do that?”
“I don’t know yet. Maybe throw something at it.”
“Can I help?”
“Yes. By staying under cover.” She peered around the the table, the robot started firing again. Looking at the base of the table, she ripped off one of the feet and waited for it to stop firing. Quickly, she aimed and chucked the concrete chunk, hitting the machine in the rotating pod on top. A sharp pop sounded and smoke drifted out, and the pod swiveled wildly.
Swiftly, CJ ran to the next table and grabbed it firmly. She spun around once, flinging the table at the robot’s inverted legs, hoping they were weak enough to buckle.
The table hit the robot and shattered, sending concrete flying across the patio. CJ hoped no one was hurt, but figured she would call for paramedics after the robot was taken care of. The robot folded to the ground, gun arms flailing, but not firing.
Mitchell peeked over the table. “Someday, you’ll need to tell me how you can do that.”
She waved him back down as she circled away from the guns to make sure the robot was down. The thing’s legs were sparking, the metal mangled. She looked closer, puzzled. She didn’t think she’s do that much damage, but she didn’t question it too hard. She ripped off a stout looking pipe from it’s back, backing away slightly as steam erupted from the stump on the machine. She walked up to the pod she hit earlier and drove the pipe down into the assembly for good measure. She heard a faint hum coming from inside fade into nothing.
She was concerned by the clicks coming from the gun assemblies, and was going to find another pipe to wreak havoc with when she heard tentative steps behind her.
“You sure know how to show a guy a good time, CJ.”
She smiled a bit, despite being a little annoyed that he didn’t keep back like she told him to. She didn’t want to think about something happening to him. Then she heard another click, then a completely different click went off in her head. “Mitchell! Run!”
She didn’t wait, she leaped and tackled him, landing several yards away as the guns started chattering away, tearing long troughs into the turf just off the beach. She kept his head down, shielding his body with hers in the event some bullets flew their way, even though she knew the ammo the robot fired would tear them both in half.
It felt like a very long time before the guns stopped their deadly torrent, but was probably only a few seconds. She looked up once she was sure it was done, wincing at the trenches in the grass not far from where they were. Mitchell sat up and they both watched as smoke started trailing from multiple parts of the robot. Soon, there was fire and the machine began to vigorously self destruct.
CJ turned to Mitchell angrily and pointed at the melting robot, “I told you to stay under cover. That could easily have torn you to shreds.” She couldn’t help it, her voice didn’t get louder, but it did shake. “Next time, stay where I tell you.”
He swallowed, “I’m sorry, I thought it was safe.” His eyes were very large.
“It’s safe when I tell you! I don’t want you to get hurt, that’s why I told you to stay behind the table!”
He held up his hands, “Okay, I’m sorry.”
Even to herself she sounded a little hysterical. Why was this bothering her so much? “Sorry doesn’t mean anything Mitchell. Please listen to be next time. I don’t want you hurt because,” she trailed off, her eyes widened. She suddenly realized why she was freaking out.
“Because?” He asked, his voice quiet.
“Because!” She was interrupted by the chirp of her communicator. The jamming was gone just like the robot. She pressed her lips together and held up a finger. “Go.”
“Uh, Siege? Everything cool? We got reports of some kind of robot shooting up the beach and a little kid beating the snot out of it. I figured that was you.”
“Yeah, Hitomi. It’s down and melting fast. Send a clean up crew?”
“Okay. On our way.”
She clicked the channel off and looked at Mitchell again. “I don’t want you hurt,” she looked down for a second. When she looked back up she felt tears in her eyes, “I don’t want you hurt because I think I’m in love with you, you idiot!” She grabbed him and kissed him fiercely.
They stayed like that until the clean up crew arrived.
