The Fall - Part II
“Buck!” Doctor Conner waved from what was the front entrance as they piled out of the cab. They joined her, noticed the soot smudges on her face. She had obviously been working ahead to salvage what she could.
“Julianne. Able to salvage anything yet?”
She nodded, “More than I would have thought. Some of the older children are grabbing what they can. Not everything, of course,” she shrugged helplessly.
Buck nodded and put a comforting hand on the woman’s shoulder. She was an elegant woman, her shoulder length hair a striking silver. “I know, Jules. Just save what we can, then rebuild.”
She smiled up at him, a tinge of unmistakable fondness in her eyes, “Always the optimist.”
“I try. Now, I’m going to leave you to coordinate the salvage. Hitomi, CJ and I are going to pay a visit to the person who perpetrated this.”
“I’d like to come too.”
They all looked at Alana, who blushed slightly. “I need to do something more than sift through memories.” She looked uncomfortable.
Thankfully, Buck didn’t belabor it. “Very well.” He glanced over at Hitomi, who still had a protective arm around her. She nodded slightly. “Let’s go then. We’ll be back as soon as we can, Jules.”
Julianne nodded, “I know I don’t need to say it, but be careful. Especially you, young lady,” she looked sharply at Alana. “That shoulder may be healed, but that’s no reason to over do it.”
“I promise, Doctor.” Alana smiled. Something CJ was grateful to see. And from her expression, so was Hitomi.
They left Doctor Conner at the door and went towards where the armory would be. Everywhere was damaged. Where there wasn’t outright destruction, there was smoke and fire damage. Unfortunately, it seemed, the whole building was a loss. While this saddened them, it hardened their resolve to punish who was responsible.
While a mess, the armory was largely intact. They picked out what they wanted to use and packed as much ammunition as they could carry. CJ cleared some rubble from a shelf and pulled out a metal case. She popped it open and pulled out all the explosives and shoved them into her pack.
“Got enough dynamite there, Butch?” Hitomi watched her.
CJ snorted. “Yes, and it’s C-4, not dynamite.”
“Uh-huh. Well. I don’t know about anyone else, but I like this outfit and I don’t want to risk ruining it, so I’m going to go change.” Everyone else nodded. They agreed to meet in the garage, with luck one of their heavier vehicles would be unharmed.
Luckily, most of them were unharmed. Buck made sure to let Doctor Conner know, so they could carry all their things to the hotel with ease. Once that was done, they stood in front of their heavily modified military vehicle and looked at each other.
“Are we ready?” Buck looked as each of them nodded in turn. “Then, let’s pay the great ‘Lord Anubis’ a visit, shall we?”
